Dani Levy's controversial and highly entertaining contemporary farce GO FOR ZUCKER, is one of the first German-Jewish comedy to come out of Germany since World War II. The cultural phenomenon dominated the 2005 German Film Prizes, picking up six Lolas including best picture, best actor (for Henry Hübchen), best direction and best screenplay before hitting theaters in the U.S.

GO FOR ZUCKER stars Henry Hübchen and Udo Samel as two brothers-- Jaeckie Zucker, a hard-living, hustling former East German celebrity sportscaster (Hübchen), and his quasi-Orthodox brother Samuel from the West (Samel). Jaeckie is up to his ears in debt again--facing jail, divorce and general ruin--when word comes that h! is mother has died, leaving an inheritance. But according to his mother's will, before he can cash in Zucker first must reconcile with his long-estranged brother, who is arriving the next day, family in tow, expecting to sit shiva for seven days. Can the secular Zucker and his non-Jewish wife pass as observant? And will he be able to sneak away to compete in a high-stakes pool tournament? The film also stars leading German actress Hannelore Elsner as Zucker's hard-pressed wife and the Warsaw-based Yiddish diva Golda Tencer as the religious brother's extravagantly pragmatic wife.

Originally slated for television, the film was almost never made because of anxiety over its unapologetically Jewish humor, political incorrectness, and somewhat indelicate plot. Mixing slapstick humor with a jaundiced eye for sharply drawn social satire, the film has sparked animated debate around the globe. Not only has its unique pedigree as a German-Jewish comedy and its portrayal of a c! omically dysfunctional Jewish family raised eyebrows, but its ! story ab out two brothers from opposite sides of the Berlin Wall has proved to be a powerful metaphor for the cultural and social estrangement that Jews and Germans (East and West) have been grappling with since the Holocaust.
A few years ago Joanna Zucker, a brand manager at Proctor & Gamble, faced a common dilemma. Her career was moving along nicely when she got the wonderful news that she was going to have a baby. She planned to return to work after giving birth, but things got more complicated than she'd anticipated. Along with the needs and demands of her job, she had a family with just as many needs and demands. Zucker rose to the challenge with such success that her friends kept asking her, "How do you do it?" Millennium Mom answers that question. Zucker devised a system of "Cardinal Principles" that address the partnership with one's spouse, the type of career desired, the goals set for both family and career, and the complex emotions that come from being a working! mom. She covers household management, travel, balancing work schedules with time at home, as well as shopping, cleaning, cooking, and handling special occasions.

Cape Fear (1962) [DVD]

  • The worst nightmare of a small-town lawyer (Gregory Peck) comes true when a criminal (Robert Mitchum) he helped put in jail returns to stalk his beautiful young wife and teenage daughter.
  • 1 DVD / 106 Minutes
A RECENTLY-RELEASED RAPIST STALKS THE FAMILY OF THE ATTORNEY WHODEFENDED HIM.Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 thriller dabbles a bit in some fascinating psychological crosscurrents between its characters, but it finally trades in all that rich material for extensive and gratuitous violence. Robert De Niro plays a serial rapist released from prison after 14 years. Angry because his appalled attorney (Nick Nolte) made it easy for him to be convicted, this monster is out to hurt Nolte's character through his wife (Jessica Lange) and daughter (Juliette Lewis). The themes of interlocking guilt and anger between these people suggests a smart film in the making. ! But the final act, set on a boat with De Niro's vengeful pervert attacking Nolte and the two women, takes a more unfortunate direction. Stick with the original (which starred Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, each of whom make a cameo appearance in this film). --Tom KeoghA southern lawyer sets a trap on a houseboat for a twisted ex-convict terrorizing his family. Lee ThompsonSuperior to Martin Scorsese's punishing 1991 remake, this 1962 thriller directed by J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) stars Robert Mitchum as a creepy ex-con angry at the attorney (Gregory Peck) whom he believes is responsible for his incarceration. After Mitchum makes clear his plans to harm Peck's family, a fascinating game of crisscrossing ethics and morality takes place. Where the more recent version seemed trapped in its explicitness, Thompson! 's film accomplishes a lot with a more economical and telling ! use of v iolence. Fantasia / Fantasia 2000 (Four-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

  • FANTASIA/FANTASIA 2000 SPEC ED BLU/DVD (BLU-RAY DISC)
More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make y! ou giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones, and others. --Mark EnglehartWalt Disney's animated musical masterpiece is an extravagan! za of si ght and sound-now brilliantly restored for the first time ever in high defi nition! The romantic life of NBA referee Billy Crystal is on the rebound when he falls for airline employee Debra Winger. Crystal also directs this transatlantic comedy slam dunk with top-notch supporting cast of comedy pros, including Joe Mantegna, Cathy Moriarty and William Hickey.Billy Crystal plays Mickey, a basketball referee who has to accompany his estranged father's body to France, where the old man requested to be buried with the other members of his D-Day platoon. Unfortunately for Mickey, the airline loses his body. Fortu! nately for Mickey, this leads him to meet Ellen (Debra Winger), an airline executive who takes personal charge of the case and even joins him at the funeral. A whirlwind Paris romance leads to marriage, but that's when the complications begin... The story of Mickey and Ellen's marriage is recounted by their friends (played by Joe Mantegna, Cynthia Stevenson, Julie Kavner, Richard Masur, John Spencer, and Cathy Moriarty) as they wait for Mickey and Ellen to arrive at a dinner party. And of course these friends have their own stories, which are played out in witty shorthand as they bicker about who's going to tell the next part of the Mickey/Ellen saga. Forget Paris is uneven (unsurprisingly, Winger is stronger in the dramatic sections and Crystal in the comic parts, a schism that takes its toll on their chemistry), but its best parts hold up, even if the whole is shaky. Plus, the movie's theme (that romantic memories aren't what makes a marriage work, you have to live! in the present) is explored with conviction and tenderness. --Bret Fetzer
